“Celebration of Girlishness: 소녀 배우기”2010_7_30-8_13Vector Space ProjectThe project, “Celebration of Girlishness” is a performance documentation by five female artistswho are somewhat skeptical of or disinterested in the notion of “girlishness” as it is oftenportrayed in Korean media. These artists learned the choreography of a popular Koreanfemale pop music group, “Girls’ Generation,” and documented their final performance by video. This project attempts to encourage us to question what it means to be women, to reassess howwe think about the notion of feminine at this current time. Also, it is an attempt to revisit thememory of being girls. From the early days of planning, the project was lead with open-mindedness by maintaining adistance from criticism on male fantasy-based, commercialized notion of “girls”. At the sametime, we attempted not to idealize the notion of innocent “girls” based on individual nostalgia.Instead, the project tried to question why people, especially men, are mesmerized and seducedby the dance movements of the “Girls’ Generation” by the artists mimicking the very samedance movements. As the project progressed, the participating artists questioned each otherthrough an email 'Q&A relay' and documented how their thoughts & feelings have changed.Through this project, these five female artists (Heaji Kim, Soyoung Park, Sunee Markosov, YuriLee, Hayoung Joo) who work in diverse media – video, performance, photography amongothers - stood in front of the camera and became subjects. By leaving their individual art spacemomentarily, in this project they found an opportunity to expand their understanding of eachother as artists, women, colleagues, and as people with different ideas.
